I have use both ATI and Nvidia cards and to be honest ATI looks better on this generation, sure the Fermi architecture looks impressive but its power hungry, heats up like a fat bastard watching food adverts and noisier that a cat on heat. Even if they have 3D vision tech you still need a extra card to make use of it, compare to the ATI equivalent eyefility which can run three monitors though one card. Price is also a factor, for the price of a GTX480 you could buy two 5870 and put them into crossfire configuration. Not a fanboy, i don't hold loyalty to either company i just look for the product that gives me performance for value.

480 is over 50% of the price yet only about 20% more performance than 5870. Not to mention the heat and power and noice (although they dont matter that much to me). But the power-cost ratio the 5870 wins hands down (in australia, in america its a different story. But Australia is full of cunts who like to rip us off.

yea see you all look at this as power to cost ratio, yea righto thats fair enough, money is the major contributor to this fact, like Dodge viper GTS to bathurst addition HSV, you get wat you pay for..... cheap performance holding GENERAL steady quality.....
you say its only 20% better 5870, but guess wat, that means my card will be 20% better then yours at 100 cores less, 512 will come and reek havok, and then we will be back to this point that has been going on for ages.... "nvidia is expensive but better performance and ati is unreliable and cheap"

"nvidia is expensive but better performance and ati is unreliable and cheap"
my ati cards are both reliable and fucking expensive ($1932), they have spent 19 months overclocked, been overvolted, bios flashed and disassembled multiple times. they idle at 90 degrees, topping load at 90-105 degrees, using the same if not more power than the gtx 480 in both idle and load
my cards are far from perfect, they are in fact flawed, but there is nothing unreliable about the ati brand compared to the nvidia brand, i doubt reliablity differs much between the two

ATI 5870 $600 P 17186 3.49 GTX 480 $910 P 19801 4.59
Crossfire $1200 P 26657 5.07 SLI $1820 P 39602 4.59
K to shut every 1 up i have done a bit, the ratio at the end is the PRICE vs PREFORMANCE so in the long run nvidia would be Better in MULTI GPu systems. based on 3dmark vantage.

xternal you pc is in a metal casing thicker then karmas head to shield it from your rage, and those cards are insane, wat are they, video editing cards obviosly cause no card from both lines for gamers has been that expensive from my memory??? (tell me if im wrong i want to look into it)
lol that quote is from me, ive had 2 ati cards, both fucked up, 4 nvidia all worked MUCH better then expected, everyone has there opinions on cards from either past experiences or majority, for me i was just unlucky, and that tarnished my faith in there reliability,
simple as that, ati good card, nvidia good card, me like nvidia better... fuk power to cost. i karate chop that shit for breakfast

Ok lith, u cant read or something coz what we been talking about in the last few pages, is that a single ATI cards pwns, but when u use them in Crossfire x then they suck balls and then Nvidia pwns in SLI, so if you gonna go for just 1 ATI card good choice, if u gonna go for 2 card or more Nvidia would be the better choice understand

I have spoke to Napster, and other people outside of the clan, and they have all said to go for the 5970 over the 480

Man that 4 way sli looks the go. But i think it would totally cook you from all that heat. My three 280's heat up the room buy about 10 deg c when running BFBC2 or crysis at high settings so im sure these would fry you.

Sgt if you wait till 3Q, intel are releasing the i7 970 which is 6 cores and the same chip as the 980x ie 32nm. Only dif is 970 has a locked multiplier set at 25 max (with turbo mode on) and the 980 has unlocked multi. Both run at 3.3ghz. i think the 970 will be some $700 cheaper. I was about to buy a i7960 (for $560 dirt cheep) when i found the spec's for the 970 on the ASUS web page. With a 25 multi you can do some big overclocks. Also found a i7 975x for $780. A month ago these were $1600.

Thats a load of crap where ever you saw that.
5870 averages 1 fps more than the 480 atm, i hardly call that SMASHED. However the min fps which is far more important the 480 smashes the shit out of the 5870.
no AA GTX 480 = 26.4 min / 35.4 avg / 40.7 max 5870 = 23.3 min / 36.8 avg / 43.02 max
8AA GTX 480 = 23.8 min / 29.6 avg / 33.43 max 5870 = 18.9 min / 32.4 avg / 37.76 max
Ive seen other benches where the 480 comes out easily on top, atm reviews are all the mess so none of them can really be trusted.

I still think better drivers will be able to boost the performance by quite a bit. The current drivers for the 480 arent that great.

Yeh, I dont feel it makes sense to pit a single gpu (480) against a dual gpu card (5970). The only benchmarks that should be made are card for card, then compare price v performance at that level.
For example, you wouldnt put a 3ghtz dual core processor up against a 3ghtz quad core processor. Then bag it for not being as quick. There is no competetion.
Nvidia were slow to release this card, but its core has loads potential and new tech. It wont be long before nvidia has a dual gpu beast as well, give it a month or two. As of right now, the only benchmarks worth comparing are the 5870 v 480. There the only real competetion. At $1000 the 5970 is for the people who want the quickest card right now. At $600 the 5870 needs to be compared to the $800 480.
Nvidia simply doesnt have a "rediculous" card to put up against the 5890 yet. but give it 1 - 2 months, it will come.
