| The 4870's scared me when they first came out, having a card that gets that hot, i sure hope they have fixed the cooling, and i don't need 2 gpu's on a card just for benchmarks, i like overal REAL WORLD performance, not just massive benchmark scores.
OOOOH LOOOOK, GDDR5, LIKE ZOMGZ, OH NOES, ITS ONLY 256BIT.

| q6600 quad core, 2.4ghz 4 gig DDR2 RAM (3 under XP 32 bit) Nvidia 8800GT
i got that, in a large large ugly ugly box with a 450 watt psu, 640gb harddrive (standward WesternDigital one), dvd burner/writer, 5.1 sound output, teeny tiny gigabyte lite motherboard (forget the model, g32 or something maybe) for $1099.
it would have cost me $900 if i built it myself, or so. a bit less if i built it now, things went a bit cheaper so maybe $800 i think, but they will probably get expensive soon. but for someone else to do it for me, i didn't mind.
got a 22" BenQ LCD for $235.
logitech x530 surround sound (i think thats the model, the really cheap one) for $40ish logitech ex110 keyboard and mouse for $40ish
oh and a belkin N1 wireless usb reciever for $70ish.
all AUD prices.
i dual boot 32 bit XP and 64 bit XP. i hate vista, i tried linux for a bit but got frustrated at having to learn a new OS.
64 bit is a bit of a waste, 1 gig more RAM and supposedly faster OS when you cant use anything. my belkin wireless doesn't have 64 bit drivers, but an ethernet cable would work, but i just have it in case 64 bit becomes useful. there are some music engineering / mixing / recording programs that run fully on 64 bit though (SONAR 7).
likewise, quad core is a waste as nothing is programmed to use it. however, it does system processes and multiple games well, just not individually AMAZINGLY better. however, i'm hanging on quad's being the imminent future. unlikely but hey we'll get there.
i could have gone maybe a better graphics card for a bit more, but definately not a diff cpu. because +$200 for 2.8ghz per core (the q6600 is about $220 last i checked) is stupid, as quads are not optimised yet with nothing programmed to make the most of them.
i didn't go a 24" because while another $100-$150 for 50% more pixels may be ideal, i'd prefer just two monitors and the current res is good enough for me. 1440x900 or some bullshit like that.
i just wanted a cheap nice system that i can use and enjoy, an upgrade from my laptop which was a compaq and cost $1000ish at the time with: 1.7ghz single core cpu, 512mb, integrated 128mb graphics card, 40gb harddrive, 15.4" screen...
so for me, this was a biiiiiig change.
i don't bother with OCing. me and a friend have had many arguments over the terminal potential and practical use of a computer, which is limited always by:
the practicality and possibility of something to make the most of the computers resources
the human being using it who'd even possibility notice the difference in a remarkable way that justifies the large price tag for an expensive souped up system.
i could run two games and msn and lots of firefox and word and heaps of things at the same time. thats enough for me. because i wouldnt really use anything else in conjunction with another game running. |

| Hey I would love a pair of those headphones as well, but Im not sure how well my family wou,d take it if I bought another pair of headphones. I recently just bought a pair of Zalman surround sound headphones and they give really good placement (for headphones), but the frequency responce just isn't there.
Personally I try to go with a don't buy headphones or speakers until you have heard them.
Then again I'm comparing the $60 headphones with Logitech X-530's in 5.1 and a pair of $300 Sennheiser headphones (HD280)
One of the things that I really like about the razer ones though is that there are seperate drivers (the actually speaker bit) for different frequencies. Kind of like an older hi-fi sound system speaker.
I'm studying sound at uni if that didn't twig during my little rant thing. |

and zygurt i reckon the barracudas and the 7.1 sound card made for them would shit on many high quality headsets/mic... would set u back around 400 aussie... |

| bara' 7.1? nah mate they r only 5.1 they cant b 7.1 no matter what card u put in them. each ear will have that extra litlle speaker in the megalodan that's what makes them 7.1. the bara are only 5.1 and that's all they will ever be. i mean y would they release the worlds first 7.1 headsets if they already had the 5.1 which u could make it as 7.1 with some card? dont make sense mate. anyway bara' good mega' even better. the megalodon hasn't been release just yet. they were ment to be released now but it looks like there is a delay o well. they will retail for 150, lil expensive but for what they are it isn't to bad. |

Using advanced processing algorithms, it converts a stereo or 5.1-channel source into 7.1-channel audio. ahhh so wu were saying sgt??... |

| lol mate b4 i even check that out, i dont think ur understanding wat 5.1 or 7.1 is. unless in the bara' u can fit in a extra speaker in each ear then thats faor enough, but u cant. thats wat makes the mega' the worlds first 7.1 headsets are u understanding. the bara' cant give u that extra speaker in each ear becuase they dont have them. (The Razer Megalodon is a 7.1 Surround Sound Gaming Headset designed specifically to incorporate the Razer Maelstrom Audio Engine, making it the definitive headset for gamers today. Utilizing next generation HRTF technologies and a superb DSP with unheard of processing power, the Razer Megalodon is the most advanced audio headset of its kind.) <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ EDIT - this guy has done more research then me. http://www.gadgetoholic.com/353/razer-announces-megalodon-gaming-headphones/

| just looked at the link and didn't show me anything about headsets, bara' are not 7.1 and they will never be. that device is a nice thing to have. it plays with the 5 speakers u have in each ear i like wat it can do very interesting but still doesn't make the bara' 7.1 headsets. r u undertanding wat 5.1 and 7.1 is now? |
