Needing alittle help with this stubborn i7 920
Currently have hyperthreading / turbo boost disabled (along with the energy saving C1E bs and EIST) @ 20x 194 3.88Ghz
However when i try 21x by 186 to get same clock, turbo boost is automatically enabled and cant be disabled i really wanted the 21x multiplier.....Are theyre any big differences with 20x or 21x multi.
Also Hyperthreading on or off? ive read about people having stablility / clock / performance issues with it both on and off. But imo having a i7 without hyperthreading on is kinda a waste?
And lastly the QPi settings, what should i be setting this to? i usually have it on 'Auto' and figured it might be a bad idea.

well you really need hyper threading on if you want a good cpu score as it doubles the threads...dont know who told you to turn it off...but they need to read into cpu's more....as without it there would be no point in overclocking because a stock clock with HT would beat ur oc'd version as far as i know

Virt, I am using same CPU as you at 21X multi with HT on and turbo off. I am using 180Ghz also. Havnt had an issue with turbo coming on by itself. My QPI settings are not on Auto but dont know off hand what they are without going into BIOS. Arny will have more info for you when he reads this Cos

Strange...i have the EX-58-Extreme Mobo by gigabyte, and it wont let me turn off Turbo Boost @ 21x Multi, then again, while monitoring the clocks, it doesnt go over or under what i have set it to....might clear CMOS and try inputting the values again.
As for the QPi settings i know theyre either double my cpu clock or ram clock or somfn :S lol
I found it strange with HT off @ 20x multi i get better 3d mark, will be trying HT off @ 21x see the differences.
I hate gigabyte mobos Have one now (my main pc for the last 4 years) and its absulately shite. It like underclocks my cpu by itself and i tried overclocking and i restart my pc and the overclock is gone.

Ok, I mostly use HT but it can cause some instability with high BCLK settings, generally 210 BLCK and above so leave it on. It also will use more v core and there for more heat is produced.
Turbo mode (ie 21x multi) gives me some grief around the 4ghz mark so i run it off to get a nice stable 4ghz @ 200 BCLK with only 1.25v but above this i use the 21x multi and it is good so far for 4.65ghz but this requires >1.5 vcore so don't go there with out a GOOD h2o set up.
UCLK freq you should set manually 2x your DRAM freq, also i find that if i try for more than 6x multi on the DRAM it requires a big voltage increase for both the DRAM & QPI so stay to 6x.

Yer my board allows you to manually set the multi to 21x and turbo off, witch is heaps more stable.

Thanks Arny, although i did raise the UCLK alot more then most would recommend (2900 to 3700 my mobo thinks its fine) with HT off i decrease temps about 5-10 degrees leaving it on while not doing alot of things doesnt make that much of a difference. i realised this mobo of mine has LED's which i never payed attention to, it shows the load / OC of the NB, SB, CPU, Ram, my Ram is green (easy to handle / minimum heat) cant see the NB or SB heatsink blocking them lol, my CPU seems to be good at orange (medium, more heat) with my UCLK at 3700. QPi is at 6.66GT/s BLCK 185 21x Mult UCLK 3700 temps idling about 35-40 degrees load doesnt go over 70.

from what i've heard, even multipliers aren't necessarily stable. is this so?

if theyre not stable then why would intel use them as stock some multiplyers are and are not stable, for instance 19x and 21x are more stable then 20x.

yeh thats what mean. as in even multipliers aren't as stable as say 19 or 21 when it comes to ocing not stock.

Yea, but even at stock if you stress out the CPU it can crash, im sure its happened to most of us, its really not the multiplier being stable, its the value you assign to it, and its clocks / voltages, you can get anything working on any multiplier value assuming it has the right voltage to operate to - that being said, obviously the more voltage you give it, the hotter your system will run which is why people mostly recommend to find the highest clock for the lowest voltage. Essentially what youd want to do is OC, then test it out with say Prime 95 or orthos or linx - i generally run my tests for 24 hours if it doesnt crash, it means its A-OK ;D
