just do what ur budget suggests. Personally, I'd be wary of i7...not sure how long they intend to keep i7's around. Dont leave out AMD, they got some good prices and as far as cpus go at the moment I do believe they are maxed out, applications are still catching up on quad core really.
P55 chipset i7s are only faster than the 1366 socket x58 i7's in single threaded apps,(and only when speed stepping is disabled on the older i7's) BUT not as fast as the older i7's in multi threaded apps. If you want to go tri sli in the future the x58 is the only way to go. P55 i7 are to expensive for what you get. If your talking tri channel mem stick with the x58 chipset i7920, cheaper and will OC every bit as much as the newer 1156 i7's and with more head room left at that level. Socket 1156 i5 & i7 were released to bring a mid priced i7 to the market because they were to run duel channel mem and not tri, so as the i5/i7 has the mem controller built in to the cpu, and designed for duel channel i would be sus going with the p55 set up in tri channel.

There is a advantage to having a memory controller on you CPU less lagg for 1 and not having a North bridge, as the graphics cards are connect directly to the FSB this said you can overclock a socket 1156 CPU futher that a socket 1366, as the only thing that u need to keep cool is the CPU and not the north bridge. 1 advantage that a socket 1366 has over a socket 1156 is that it has more pins on the cpu meaning that it needs a bigger FSB or QPI link as more infromation is going to be send to and from the CPU giving it more Gflops/s processing power ARNY is right when it comes to that a socket 1156 is faster in single threaded apps i dont knw what the advantages of having TRI channel DDR3 is over DUAL channel
Um i may be wrong but i do beleave the socket 1366 has no north bridge as such. It's memory controller is also locted on the cpu, hence the reason intel recomended 1.65v max for the memory volts. The north bridge is still on these boards but not use as it was origanally with the 775 socket boards. As for the duel v tri memory, you have greater band width with the tri channel. If you look at any of the bench test between the i7 870 and the i7 950 when tested with a game like crysis you will see the diff in the two set up's. This is were the tri channel comes in. Oh and buy the way i understand perfectly.

K mayby i screwed thing up here for you a bit, truly i think you shud just go for a Core i7 920 and a socket 1366 and this is the last post of this thread.
Yer sorry base we may have got off topic abit there. as illicit has pointed out ether of the current i7 set ups will be along way better than your current set up. The main diff as far as whats needed for the two sockets is as follows socket 1156 CPU i5 or i7860 / 870, Cpu cooler to fit 1156 board, duel channel memory so 4 sticks of memory max. socket 1366 CPU i7 920 / 950 / 975, Cpu cooler to fit 1366 board, tri channel memory so 6 sticks of memory max . Both boards use DDR 3 memory, as for the rest of the gear you have desided on using it should all still stay the same.

ok 1 last thing is this a good PSU to get with the connections and stuff
Corsair CMPSU-950TX 950W
950W \" Corsair\" TX-950 ATX Power Supply, 140mm fan, 6 Connectors of PCI-E 6+2 pin, 12 x SATA Connectors, Universal AC input 90~264V
ive looked it up and im sure its compatible for all the parts im getting but i wouldnt mind someone to tell me if im wrong or not and also is it actually better than the original one i was getting Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4 x58
That shop may not sell the board you were after but im sure x58 boards are still availlable. As for the board that the shop is selling you, if it is a p55 chipset you will need a i5 or i7 860/870. Also do a search on reviews for that board to see if it has what you are after.

ok i just had a phone call from pentec a company that i was gonna buy the X58 motherboard from and he said that its been discontinued thats about the 6th or 7th person thats said that but he said they have the next one up with is a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 just wondering weather this is worth getting and if it can run the CPU and RAM im gonna use
Well i have had a i7 running a OC from the release of the chip (920) and its still going strong, Will oc to 4350ghz as well! As for Nvidia who knows but notice the name of the site " Semi accurate" it also seams like these guys have a problem with nvidia if you read some of the other stories, all they do is bash nvidia non stop lol. Intel are about to enter the GPU market in a big way, ether way there is still plenty of 285's and 295's around, and the 295 still knocks the 5870 over.

I vote Base will attempt to mount the Heatsink on CPU, put too much Thermal paste on, push heatsink down, squirt paste all over the mother board, try to clean it off with Meths, dissolve the etching on motherboard, and sit and cry while his $600 mobo gets its plastic sizzled by solvent.
Good luck buddy

i make a rule that ill only injure myself/do something stupid once per build. so far its holding together with injuries 4 to stupidity 0
