nope, you need hard drives with identical storage space i believe.

if youw want to gett best performance and reliability you need to get two identical hard drives in every respect. Best way to go is (of you can afford to) avoid raid and get a WD Velociaptor thoes are faster than anythig else around, otherwise just get 2 identical hard drives in RAID0

Actually, SSD is much faster, let alone SSD in RAID Razz But you do get more MB/$ with the VR's. rabbit

I assume you still think the world is flat, right? Razz

There's a reason why SSD is being pushed so hard now... mechanical hard drives are shit. They're noisy, hot, heavy, take up lots of room (in quantity), easy to fail and worst of all, they're SLOW.

whats the life span of an SSD?
i heard somewhere HDD have like 10-15 years or something, id imagine SSD would be much more improved.
and wouldnt running shit in RAID reduce the lifespan by alot? best you just go with SSD if its speed you want more than capacity

but yeah, SSD ftw, my next computer upgrade will have an SSD at LEAST for the drive the OS and most programs n games are installed on.
it wont be long before SSD become dirt cheap

The reasone why SSDs havent taken off is because they have a short lifespan due to memory effects so you can only write a certain bit a few times before it stops working completely

open the case and look at the label. i dont recommend using an older hard drive with a newer one because manufactures release different versions of the same hard drive and also teh older one will probably die sooner

It's really unneccessary to worry about.

Who seriously uses a hard drive that is "10-15 years" old??

There's <9000 hours in one year. OCZ Vertex drives have an MTBF time of 1.5 MILLION hours.

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3403&p=4

Quote :
SSD lifespans are usually quantified in the number of erase/program cycles a block can go through before it is unusable, as I mentioned earlier it's generally 10,000 cycles for MLC flash and 100,000 cycles for SLC. Neither of these numbers are particularly user friendly since only the SSD itself is aware of how many blocks it has programmed. Intel wanted to represent its SSD lifespan as a function of the amount of data written per day, so Intel met with a number of OEMs and collectively they came up with a target figure: 20GB per day. OEMs wanted assurances that a user could write 20GB of data per day to these drives and still have them last, guaranteed, for five years. Intel had no problems with that.

Intel went one step further and delivered 5x what the OEMs requested. Thus Intel will guarantee that you can write 100GB of data to one of its MLC SSDs every day, for the next five years, and your data will remain intact. The drives only ship with a 3 year warranty but I suspect that there'd be some recourse if you could prove that Intel's 100GB/day promise was false.

crazy shiz

and true, in a few years probs upgrade harddrive and transfer any data you want to keep to the newer one.
