I have been at it for hours reading countless reviews and both cards have there pro's and cons. The outstanding ATI 5970 seem's to be the best single card in the market atm. Although Nvidia fans will tend to argue that.

I've stumbled upon the price range of these two cards. $200-$300 mark for both cards. "GTX470" or "ATi 6870"

I've seen the new Bart architecture that the new ATi 6870's have to offer. Very similar to the Ati 5850's model. from the review's I've read, they'd compared it to the 5850's, 5870's and the GTX 470. But what fascinates me is that the 6870's are a tad bit weaker than there older model "5870". But I believe the focus on this design was to increase the tessellation power in which stand out in some test/reviews.

They compared it to the GTX 470 and to me this card is looking good atm. Not many reviews on it. Besides the recent comparison I had seen wit the new Ati cards.

What are your thoughts, Why do you believe the card you choose is better? and give clear explanations. Might not be the best place to search for an answer. But I do want to hear the thoughts of the community.

i have used both ati and nvidia. currently run a 460sli.

tbh, the 470 is a great card. good quality. the 6870 is just as good though. however i have run into issues with ATI. though that might be just me

you play games on your 3D tv do you not? if your wanting to play 3d games go with the nvidia as they have full 3D support. 3D on crysis is hard to play but frkn hilarious lol

From all the reading, 3D totally slipped my mind. My decision is veering to the Nvidia.

GTX 460 1GB overclocked to 900mhz air = GTX470+

6870 is around the 5870 performance mark atm.


If you get the GTX470 it should be a mint card. Overclocks well and performs around 5870 and better when overclocked.

Its really upto personal preference for either ATI or Nvidia.

You can also hold out for a few more weeks for both ATI and Nvidia to release there High end cards. GTX580 comen our way

Price drops on GTX480 etc


Reason i would go for Nvidia is simple for the Raw power and the way the cards handle AA and they have more Vram. Driver support is just awesome.

AA has been improved a lot with Fermi and has hardly any performance impacts. 32x CSAA FTW

Out of the 470/6870 the 6870 is the better card (not by leaps and bounds), Though the new ATI card's will blow that out of the water:

Personally never been a fan of anything AMD/ATI but this look's extremely promising!!!

Nvidia plans to launch the GTX580 buttt, MEH!!! not overly impressive.

Either way these card's are going to be a nice upgrade over any current GPU's :-S I hope!!!

I bought the Ati again. Bang for buck. I will look into the high end cards when I have some extra money. But for a decent price for a mid range, I choose the Ati 6870. Currently running it now. I'm going to do some test to see the difference. from my old 4870

I know Syler is so right on this one, the nvidia brand CAR in the end it's just like the ati CAR, all down to how the driver takes the graphics onto the road. All just great cars in the end.

Karma, the in built sound that this card has works . But with an expense. You know with HDMI cables, some of them don't play audio. I hope you didn't get a cheapo. That might be your problem.

HDMI that dont play audio never heard of it, my 1.99 from japan works a treat

yeh same, my hdmi plays all my audio fine. wav/mp3/FLAC etc..

hmm.... that is weird I have a 8800gts 640mb as a media pc hooked up to the plasma and it won't play sound through the hdmi and the optical cable connected to the mobo and plasma don't produce sound.
Charlie for my 4890 I have a optical port in the back. I think it might be that ati/amd have audio chips in their cards and your directly connecting to a mini hdmi, whereas nvidia cards aren't at the same level in audio on their cards.

there may be certain drivers mate?

i had to install some for my gtx460 sli to produce sound on my 3D tv.

lol it comes with the nvidia 260.99 drivers. you just have to check the option when installing it
