PostSubject: DVD upscaling   DVD upscaling EmptyThu Jul 22, 2010 6:51 am

I was wondering if I am playing a dvd through my HDMI port into my tv that supports 720p will my pc auto upscale everything to 720p or will I need extra codecs/plugin's/programs to do it. If so what do I need?

they could increase the resolution of the tv to a hd level, but not the resolution of the movie, which in turn would be stretched over th larger resolution of the screen

'upscaling' doesnt mean shit. your still getting 420 regaurdless of how big the screen is. nothing can change that.

that is a technology used by some dvd players that artificially sharpen the picture to try and give it to you in partially better way. But as they said it wasn't much better and it isn't real upscaling the resolution its just adding filters to the picture......u ever used Adobe b4?

EDIT:
ALSO...

Quote :

Shouldn’t I get a Blu-ray or HD-DVD player instead?
If you want true High-Definition pictures, then yes you should.

therefor this statement backs up what i'm saying which is that it is a fake artificial High definition!!!!

You can't extract more information from a DVD that can't hold that much, all it can do is like the guys said stretch and apply filters to make it appear of better quality. You can only squeeze a certain amount of data out of a DVD.

I Second Blu Ray Rips although it hurts the download quota. 4-12gb+ per movie

that article has no impact on what i said. it even says it's results are shit.

I can tell you without even looking into it that 'upscaling dvd players' is a marketing scam, because any dvd player will play a 420 movie on a 1080 screen in the exact same way, whether the dvd player does the upscaling or the tv, it makes no difference, you're still just looking at the images at 400% zoom, whether it uses 'smart pixel sharpening' or not.

the only way you could possibly upscale it with any success in quality gain is using a scaling fractal algorithm, which as far as i know currently only exist for the use of photographic printing, and they can scale up to 10x magnitude without loss of quality. it would take a huge amount of hardcore CPU power to do a 25fps 2x fractal scale.

personally i like to buy them to get the full FPS out of them....avatar at 20-23 FPS = Pritty bad shit...hated it

one more thing, i got a Samsung 40" LCD full HD, it only runs at a max 60Hz and the tv receives only up to 60Hz signal wise(i think), yet they have a technology that is called 100Hz which makes the picture appear to be running at 100Hz.....its a technology not the real thing

it does make it smoother, but in my experience it sometimes makes up and down movement of the camera a bit jolty......once again mines old and technology has advanced

they use to make the 100hz effect by strobing the back light to fill in the missing hz

the nintendo 3ds has it. its simply now a matter of making the screen bigger and finding an 'ips' kinda solution to the angle problem.

at the end of the day, unless you've got a 1080p TV with all the proper leads (HDMI), Any HD surround sound system and a blu ray player that supports 1080p (As I understand not EVERY blu ray player is proper 1080p), you're not going to get the proper HD experience!

So save about 5000 bucks and go wild, also...do as trae says and dont buy 3D, just get a high quality LED LCD TV.

Its like all the ppl that buy PS3's hoping for that sweet HD movie experience...they run em on cheap shit LCD's. It's all 'lol I wasted my cash!'

at the end of the day you should be buying a tv based on quality and value. my g10a is still the best for quality and price, and has fantastic sound, removing any need for a sound system. callibrated like all screens and monitors should, it has flawless picture quality with no ghosting or glitches ever, great gamma and crispy blacks.

crispy blacksssss.

its a tv, i dont 'play' anything on it. and its a 46. all vierra come in 46 and 50 and some even higher regaurdless of model. plenty big enough for my apartment.

in my opinion anything bigger then 46 is a waste because you're crossing the line of detail per inch as theyre all still just 1080 spread across a fatter area. size generally reduces quality.

If you got a xbox 360 you can always use h/http://tversity.com/, this will let you stream video and audio from a home network. I been using this to watch non xbox 360 compatible format such as flv, ect. Works great , also been using my bros wii with home brew channel and a 1tb hdd with it as a home media center, it does the job good only thing doesn't have HDTV since the hardware is not powerful enough (don't have a hdtv so not really a big deal)
