Yet another problem. Empty
PostSubject: Yet another problem.   Yet another problem. EmptySun Nov 01, 2009 8:51 am

Hey guys. Having a major problem with my computer now. My computer runs fine whenever I am browsing the web or watching movies, i could leave it on for 24 hours and it would be fine. When i play games, my computer will restart out of nowhere. Lately this problem has become more and more frequent.

I downloaded borderlands and begun to play it, i don't even get 5 minutes into the game and my computer restarts without warning. There is no blue screen, it just restarts, and when it starts back up, i get no error message.

When i play Crysis Wars, it appears that the computer crashes when my there is a fair amount of activity going on that it crashes, though, it sometimes also crashes randomly. Today my computer crashed twice while playing Crysis Wars. The first time was while i was in the prototype facility and everyone was throwing grenades, my computer decided to just restart for some reason. The second time, not long ago, was on Mesa, someone had fired the Singularity Tank and i was near it and could see all the blue stuff, and my computer decided to restart on its own accord without any warning.

My computer specs are:

CPU: Q6600 @ 3.0ghz
RAM: 4GB 800MHz RAM
GPU: GTX 260+ 216SP
HDD: 320GB Western Digital, 120GB Seagate Baracuda
MOBO: GA-P35-DS3L
PSU: 600W
Fans: 2x 250mm Blue LED Fans, 3x 120mm Blue LED Fans
Extra: 9 in 1 Card reader

I have done a stability test for my CPU overclock and it is stable, temperatures never go over 60 degrees. I haven't tested my RAM yet though i doubt it is a problem, but i will test it just incase. My GPU i have a factory overclocked GPU which i have not touched, the temperatures under load do not exceed 65 degrees. I did do a test on my GPU and when it got to 65 degrees it crashed. When playing Crysis Wars though my GPU does not reach 60 degrees, I even turned the fan to 100% and no luck.

I have highlighted my PSU because i believe that it is the problem. I'm not sure that 600watts is enough for my system especially considering that my PSU is a no name PSU. I am also thinking that it could be the graphics card because of the test that i did and because the crashes happen when the card is under load, though it seems illogical as it never artefacts or overheats and it is still on all factory settings.

I really don't know what the problem is, I have uninstalled and re-installed my GPU drivers. Uninstalled and re-installed DX9 which is GPU related. I have simply run out of ideas, going to re-install chipset drivers now. Thanks in advance for any help i get.

Hi Serbz,

Mate I believe your right, its properly the PSU I have the same setup as you. But my PSU is HX620watt Corsair and that’s heaps of juice for this kind of a setup. You could even go SLI. What brand is ya 260 as well?

I’m voting it’s the PSU given the info that you have provided there. I would'nt trust a no name either.

I would also think it could be the PSU but it could also be that your cpu or gpu is overheating and hitting the saftey shutdown thingy.

I guess the next time it restarts, go into your bios and check the temps and make sure nothing is really over 70ish. Also while you're check check what you actual shut down thingy is set to and see if its close to it or not. if it is then thats your problem.

Galaxy should be no drama. Gotta oscilloscope Laughing then you would know if its ya PSU. For what its worth buy a new psu I reckon, cheap enough.

I was always told never get a shit PSU, bad sorce of power with high fluctuations will shut down the computer with no error msg.

Mate how old is your psu, cause as they get older they become unstable and carn't put out the power they once did.I would think 600w is more than enough for that set up! Here is a link to a PSU calculator. Give it a go and make sure you add in the age of the PSU your using, it will tell you if you need to replace it.

Hey mate, i done that test and it said that I am using 409W. The reason that I am still thinking of changing my PSU is that when i turn on my computer it makes this chugging sound until the computer has been running for a while, that sound is something to do with the fan.

Quote :
i reckon its ur memory, prove me wrong

I'll run a memory test just incase it is that, but i highly doubt it.

Quote :

What do you mean by just shuffled around? Just put the same ram into different slots?

Quote :

Did that to my old computer mate, has never turned on since.

I'm not entirely sure that my PSU fan is dead though it isn't perfect. Whenever i turn on my computer the fan is really loud until the computer has been running for a while. Once i stuck a pencil in their and stopped the fan while the computer was running, and their was no sound. I think i might just buy a new PSU for that reason because i cbf soldering the fan.

Thanks for all your help guys. Very much appreciated.

Yep Wounded and Trae win the thread by the looks of things! Thanks to everyone else for their help to. I will do a few more tests later on or tomorro to see if it is the RAM stick or if it is the slot. But it was the RAM. Again thanks everyone.

I find it very weird that no blue screens where showing when your ram failed. Normally when hardware fails the stop screen will appear, mine did anyway. My ram went a few months after building my system. I only run 2 gigs of HyperX now Razz no more crashes and it took me a long time to figure it out by myself. Laughing

Glad you know what it is now.

Question is what ram will you be getting now? Im gonna get 4gigs OCZ reaper ram one day soon, heard thats tough ram.

Was gonna get some G-Skill. I need to know whether or not i need it all to be the same brand or just same frequency? I have 3gb RAM left atm. So there is no point in me getting more as i have switched back to Windows XP 32 Bit. When i switch to Windos 7 64 Bit, then i might get extra RAM. Though even 3gb seems to be more than sufficient at the moment.

cool Serbz. Yeah I just seem to scrape through with 2 gigs on 64bit vista only just playing crysis!!!

Quote :

my understanding is its better to get the same brand and of course same freq, I would get the same!

I wonder what killed ya ram ......mine I think was OC'ed to much and no voltage ajustment. Now mines locked in at 2.1volts at 975mhz i think. No worries at all now. Unless its ya mobo ram slot.

I also found it hard just to get one stick of 2 gigs, only sell single 1 gig or kits of 4gig 2x2. Not sure how you will go with finding 3gigs single stick of ram, if thats what ya after. Mite be the only option to 6gig kit.
