Subject: HOLY fuckin shit *Japan Earth Quake / Tsunami Fri Mar 11, 2011 12:36 am
just watched on the news about another earth quake in JAPAN.... if you havent seen it turn the tele on and have a look, 8.9 on the ricter off shore causing a massive title wave and after shocks of 8.4 inland. 7th largest earth quake in history.
Yeah, there were warnings that NZ may be affect as well which they don't need after Christchurch.
Here's a pressing issue emerging, the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant is in danger of meltdown due to cooling systems failing. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42025882/ns/world_news-asia-pacific/

Some 3,000 people within two miles (three kilometers) of the plant were urged to leave their homes, but the evacuation zone was more than tripled to 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) after authorities detected eight times the normal radiation levels outside the facility and 1,000 times normal inside Unit 1's control room.
The government declared a state of emergency at the Daiichi unit — the first at a nuclear plant in Japan's history. But hours later, the Tokyo Electric Power Co., which operates the six-reactor Daiichi site, announced that it had lost cooling ability at a second reactor there and three units at its nearby Fukushima Daini site.
The government quickly declared states of emergency for those units, too, and thousands of residents near Fukushima Daini also were told to leave.

Dr. Fred Mettler, emeritus professor of radiology at the University of New Mexico, studied the health effects of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant explosions in Ukraine and has spent decades researching and writing about radiation exposure.
Mettler said the plants in the U.S. and Japan are far advanced from Chernobyl, which he likened to an airplane hangar with the nuclear reactor core sitting out in the open.
Japanese scientists have had more than 60 years since World War II to study the health effects of radiation poisoning and they won't take any step lightly, including releasing radioative vapors into the atmosphere to ease building pressure in a reactor, he said.
"These people are more knowledgeable about radiation than anyone," Mettler said.
an 8.9, thats gotta be the biggest ever recorded in history, it made its way to Hawaii...
sad stuff, though through these disasters, great things emerge - humanitarian help, comradery between countries and a common realizations...
It reached further than that, California was affected as well, they showed video footage of a about .5m wave sweeping up a canal and into a little harbour, which messed up some boats. Of course the americans were crying like 'omg this is terrible our luxury boats are getting bumped around'.
Saw some footage on the news of japan and its fucked, entire houses were just being swept away. Death toll is already over 1300
Here's a good recount of the events: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/blog/2011/mar/12/japan-tsunami-earthquake-live-coverage

This was one VERY strong quake...see below:
"Reports from Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology suggests that after the disastrous earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on 11th March, 2011, the earth's axis has shifted by 25 cm resulting into shortening of days by one millionth seconds.
Though the affect is very small but it can change many things on minute level. Satellite communication and Launching may be affected. The researchers said that while the minuscule change may be completely undetectable, it still illustrates the punch behind the Japan's massive earthquake. Last year a 8.8-magnitude earthquake shifted the globe's axis by about 10 centimetres that hit Chile resulting into shortened days by 1.26 millionths of a second.
Meanwhile U.S. Geological Survey said the main island of Japan has actually shifted 2.4 metres. Changing the geography of the earth. Whether such changes will bring better after results or will make the situation worse cannot be told now. Such changes do affect climate and ecology of the region.
Shifting of plates or land masses is not a new thing. Today what we see different continents in the world map is actually a result of tectonic plates movement due to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, there was a single continent earlier, all the present continents and land masses were together millions of years ago. Well he's still getting on steam so he aint dead thats for sure, obviously he'd have more important things to be worrying about rather than coming to see all of us. He'll be around sooner or later.

i spoke to him other day, said he and his family are all safe but was very bad experience! Showed me some pix on FB....the sidewalks are literally ripped apart.
Apparently the nuclear situation isn't looking good. However I don't trust the media regarding these matters as you need to have some pretty good qualifcations to understand it properly and make any predictions.
Best to just wait and see and hopefully it doesn't get any worse.
