HOW TO PLAY CRYSIS WARS

hmm this is somthing i thought about, considering sometimes i come on the server and a few people seem to need a hand with playing better and arent getting good scores.

so i thought all the people who can play well and have something to contribute should help in this thread, giving newer players helpful tips of how to play better

i know most of the people who use the forums are regulars and are quite good now / were always good in Wars but i guess it could help people in the future when they drop past our forums, and what we may take for granted others may not know about at all.
also we can point new comers who have any questions about gameplay to this thread to help them out.

EDIT: LIST OF PATCHES (about 1 gig worth, from Internode servers)
links to patches:

1.3 http://games.on.net/file/23041/Crysis_Wars_v1.3_Patch

1.4 http://games.on.net/file/25237/Crysis_wars_v1.4_Patch

1.5 http://games.on.net/file/26108/Crysis_Wars_Patch_v1.5

these are all you should need, 1.3 is supposed to include 1.1 and 1.2.

-note-: i couldnt find any similar threads though im sure one was made once. perhaps a mod could sticky this as well?
if no one likes the idea then just let it stagnate

note to self: cl_hud 0 removes hud

PostSubject: Re: How to play Crysis Wars   Thu Apr 02, 2009 11:49 am

ill go first with a few basics:

chatting with people!: asking questions is one of the best ways to learn. communicating also helps. use Y to chat with everyone in game, and U to talk to everyone on your TEAM only.

Aim for the head!: people die faster if you shoot them in the head

Look before you shoot!: don't get scared by a cloaker if they have your teammates name above them otherwise you may upset a few people

Shoot to kill!: provided it doesnt have your teammates name above it, shoot first - ask questions later. usually your first instinct is right

DONT RUSH INTO COMBAT!: it just makes you an easily noticeable target. if you take the time to sit back a bit behind some cover, you'll be surprised how many people you notice zipping along the battlefield, allowing you to pick some targets and decide your next move

Keep moving to survive! dont camp!: sometimes it seems like a really good idea to hide on that nice rooftop or on a crane or behind a corner and just wait for them to come to you. if you plan to live longer than 2 kills then keep moving! because once youve nailed someone, theyll be pretty happy to find you right where you nailed them, sneak up and take you out for getting too comfortable.

Laser Sight improves accuracy!: across many forums people have argued whether or not it changes anything, at some point it seemed it didnt, but as of the latest versions, IT DOES! (and yes, people can see it when youre cloaked)

Silencer hides location on the radar!: exactly as it says, ensuring less people know where you are. also..

USE the RADAR to locate enemies!: exactly as it says. if the triangle icon of an enemy is larger than it usually is, that means they are ABOVE your position, if it's faint, then they are BELOW.

look after your teammates, secure locations!: nothing is more annoying than for someone to run into the proto or war fact, and sit in a corner while enemy clays that didnt get you take out your teammates. if you run in somewhere, make sure its secure! find any enemies hiding in vents or nearby, any clays theyve left cleverly hidden, and any other possible set ups and use team chat to tell your team! also, work with your team! youre more likely to live longer if theres more of you covering each others backs

Shoot the vehicles weak spots!: almost all vehicles have weak spots (if they dont, then anywhere is good) usually these are made obvious by big vents. or when they are damaged whereever you see smoke pouring out is usually the weak spot.
For battle tanks, this is on top of the tank at the back, between the big round fuel tanks and the turret. damage dealt is usually 3x the amount than just anywhere.

handy repair torch: the repair torch, not only does it do well to keep vehicles tip-top but if used on landmines, claymores or c4, you can get 50p for each one deactivated! though id suggest avoiding c4 (probably a trap) and just taking out landmines to keep your vehicles safe (claymorse could still get you if youre too close!)

Use the right suit modes!: Armor mode will increase your survivability threefold. any other mode you will die in a few shots. while strength mode DOES improve aiming, restrict it mainly to long distance shooting - not only does glowing bright red make you obvious but you die faster

Strength mode Fists one hit kills in AusServerFTW!: exactly as it says, though dont bring fists and sticks to a gun fight

AIMING TIPS!: strength mode increases aiming, but isnt good for getting close. being prone increases aiming best, though crouching helps too. the best way to aim, however, is to remain calm and train your sight on the target - DO NOT FLAIL WILDLY EVERYWHERE. to improve this, keep your mouse sensitivity relatively low.

Cloak mode =/= OMG INVISIBLE CANT SEE ME ROFLHAX!: while being in cloak does make you harder to notice, you CAN still be SEEN and be HEARD. Cloakers make an annoying staticy-sounding noise whenever they are nearby, having stereo headphones or speakers can help you find them. they can also be seen as they distort the image around them and have a blue/slight red outline. oh, and YOU CAN SEE THEIR SHADOWS.

So what good is cloak mode?!: if you stay in the shadows, or in bushes, and proned - very rarely anyone will see you. and because that distinctive sound is made by anyone, even allies and yourself when cloaked, sometimes people will just ignore it. then you can laugh as everyone run pasts you allowing you to get em from behind.

CLAYMORES = EASY KILLS!: using claymores just behind doorway entrances in bunkers, war factories or the proto, is usually able to get you a few easy kills. however...

watch out for claymores!!: people use claymores in all manner of sneaky ways, not just as described above. sometimes using them at the energy site doorways, on top along the walk ways, in bushes of well used paths, OUTSIDE BUNKERS at the enemy bunkers entrance or corners so when they run circles around em they get blown up.

TUNNEL VISION IS BAD!: Tunnel Vision is when you focus too much on whats right in front of you, as such you miss many details. according to psychologists, we notice patterns and movement more with our peripheral vision (out the sides of our eyes). as such youll find if you arent leaning over your keyboard an inch from the screen, but relaxing and sitting back, youll notice alot more to your left and right, ABOVE you as well as BELOW right in front on the ground. This can help you find claymores youre about to step on, people hiding on the alien ships in energy sites or on top of the towers, snipers up on roofs or hills, people skirting between cover and coming around the corner.

people are less inclined to look outside their field of vision!: according to the above, people are generally fixated on whats in front. by being sneaky and hiding behind trees or on top of objects like towers and platforms and containers, you may be less noticed by people really close by, allowing you to get the jump on them

use tactics and think like the enemy!: Well given everything i've already written, obviously you may not be the only one to use this stuff, so THINK LIKE YOU WOULD IF YOU WERE THEM!
search well used spots people hide in, such as in the proto facility: there is a vent in the main room at the top people sneak into, or they hide in prone in that same room near the little stairs which people rarely look at. Energy sites - people hide in cloak under the stairs in the tower, on top of the tower, or up the stairs in the corner in the tower. you can see people's shadows when cloaked and even if they are cloaked if you stop at look at these spots you may find someone there. you can also shoot through the mesh flooring though it reduces damage a bit.

In AusServerFTW, alot of new things such as vehicles, mod, and server info is conveyed via the CONSOLE you can use the console with the 'Tilde' key ( ~ ) which is between the Escape Key and the TAB key. to close the console, press the button again. you can use the 'page up' and 'page down' buttons to scroll up and down the text.

pb_plist = lists all players currently in game with their name, slot number, and GUID (used for keeping track of unique players)
pb_security 0 = turns off pb and may help stop being people auto kicked by PunkBuster from the server
s_soundenable 0 = turns off sound ingame which is used if you get a recurring/looping sound bug, replace the 0 with a 1 to turn it on again
r_displayinfo 1 = turns on in game display info such as your frame rate and memory usage, replace the 1 with a 0 to turn it off again

in AusServerFTW, you can also use quick commands by typing them into chat (either Y or U)
some commands are (those with a ! in front MUST have ! in front to work):

levelrotation - tells you the level rotation and which level is next
!lock - locks the current vehicle youre in so only you can use it
!vote nextlevel - initiates a vote to skip to next level, 50% of the server need to say !yes for it to pass
newvehicles - displays a list of new vehicles you can buy.

how to buy new vehicles: to buy new vehicles, when in the appropriate facility, open your Console and type 'buy vehiclenamehere' then press enter
some examples of new vehicles are:
twincannonaa - 300pp
vtoltank - 800pp
so for example; typing 'buy twincannonaa' would take 300pp from you and produce a AA tank with two of its anti aircraft cannons instead of the cannons and missiles.
if you did something wrong, dont have the pp or arent in the right place - nothing will happen

there are many more things you can do, simply read the server messages that show up to know how and what.

In regards to Hackers If you suspect anyone of hacking on the server, here are the steps you should take:

ARE YOU SURE?! False alarms happen alot and usually are annoying. it is also offensive to people who are good players (though some take it as compliments). Hackers however are generally rare, but there is no way of knowing when they come and how often. If someone is doing really well, it doesn't necessarily mean they are hacking. the most common form of hacks that you can pick up in game are incredibly obvious.

if you ARE sure, then inform a SERVER ADMIN, they are the ones with the power to do anything and can help determine whats going on.

while telling them, or in the event that a server admin ISNT on, the following steps will help:

1: GET EVIDENCE - either video via FRAPS, or SCREENTSHOT them (use F12).
2: get their NAME, the TIME on which you were playing and it occured, and what hack you suspect they used.
3: type 'pb_plist' into the console and get their GUID! anyone who comes onto the server has a GUID, and no matter what profile name they use this ID is the same. this is also the ID admins can use to ban players if they are doing something wrong

Some common hacks:
Freeze Pistol: a pistol that shoots out the MOAR freeze ray, incredibly obvious
Fly / Teleport: people who zoom around the level flying and / or teleporting up and around. incredibly obvious
Ghost Hacking: a less obvious hack, though made obvious by someone sitting in the home base / behind it, cloaked, and some how killing many people out on the field. seems to be fairly common and noticeable when you get killed by someone when no one is near you.
Aimbot: I will NOT tell you how to spot an aimbot, because its damn hard. if you suspect anyone of aimbot hacking, tell an admin first and let them deal with it. some people are just good at aiming.

If an admin was speccing a potential aimbotter, if they turned the gamespeed down low right as the person went to aim at someone, would the tiny flicker of the aimbot locking on to them become very apparent?

maybe... but it might take the shot off target and it hits the target... hard to know... unless blatantly obvious...

yeah.

the whole point of trying to avoid saying 'how to spot an aimbotter' is because anyone who read it would think they knew 'everything' about aimbots and how to spot them and start calling anyone who can aim really well a hacker.

so it seemed to make sense to let an admin make that decision rather than just anyone who thought they knew.

hmm considering adding stuff about improving performance by graphics settings n stuff

and what was the command to turn sound off? is is pv_soundenable 0 or sv_soundenable 0
i always forget..

no sound? haha your a madman!

Another tip....

Listen to your surroundings, as important as sight is on the game so is sound. Footsteps clanking on metal, changing of weapons, reloading, what gun they are using, what vehicle they are driving. It's all very important and can usually give you an advantage over your opponent because you know what to expect.

Don't stay out in the open, hug walls, run under verandahs, it's easy to sniper someone when they make themselves blatantly obvious. Use the terrain to your advantage, if your getting pumelled in a 1v1 fight...duck and cover then come back at them unexpected. Many times have I beaten better players now for using cover.

yeah usually an aimbotter's aim is stuttery, jumps from place to place instead of being a smooth motion to that place, but as mentioned if u suspect, let an admin know.

i think it was sv_soundenable 0... dessi, he mentions this because in original crysis u used to get a soundloop bug, using this command and then the same command with 1 at the end wud fix it

i havent had the bug relating to having to use this for AGES, but in case its needed, its mentioned... good stuff your dog

ok my own tips

1: strafe side to side in a gun fight and hold shift while you do it. Strafing a few metres left/right is the most effective way of winning a gunfight in wars, maybe throw in a prone if you think your going to lose

2: DONT AIM FOR THE HEAD
i know this sounds counter intuitive but (no joke) i get more headshots aiming for the crotch then i do if i try to go for the head. The reason fo this is that in wars recoil is almost non-existant instead the bullets spread out in a cone shape that is rediculously wide.

3: turn off mouse acceleration. you can usually do this through control panel or the logitech setpoint if you have a G mouse

4: its more important to be able to track a player than to be able to turn around quicky

5: If you really want to do well, turn off weapon inertia

6: (this ones for serbz) if you think you play better with a framerate above 60 your a fucking idiot. current monitors have a refresh rate of 60-75hz meaning the maximum framerate you can display is 75 anyway. Anything above that will make the screen 'tear' in the middle as it tries to display part of the next frame while the previous one is still being displayed. Playing with VSYNC on fixes this issue.

im glad you said those they are pretty handy and clarify better some things i said, also especially the one about vsync as no one seems to know when to use it

and yeah wounded with the sound bug i used to get it alot 1.2 mainly in Mesa when flying vtols or tarmac, as well as on those levels just shooting my gun in general sometimes made the loop occur, so just in case anyone needed it. need to work it out.

here's another handy hint

are you playing because of how good it looks or effective gameplay?:
while Crysis has amazing graphics all turned up, some computers just cant cope with the detail AND dealing with 20+ connections to a server bounding back n forth to your comp. while a few problems can be due to your internet connection, for smoother play on your side it is better to turn those sweet sweet graphics right down.

start by setting everything to 'best performance' then work your way up to 'good' then 'good visuals'. when you start to notice more lag (Graphics lag) then go back to the last setting and start turning individual settings up if you so desire. some settings require more system resources than others.

also, leave VSync OFF and Anti Aliasing OFF, and keep your resolution to within what your monitor is capable of, maybe even one setting or two lower.

easiest way to see your performance is to type r_displayinfo 1 into the console and check the framerate. You should be able to maintain a costant rate above 35 (some people prefer it up to 40) but anything above 50 is wasted. Also, after you finish benchmarking turn VSYNC on, it doesnt actuall affect performance, all it does is cap your framerate at 75 0r 60 depending on the type of monitor you use. Make sure the performance remains steady when looking through a sniper scope, because that is usually a big fps killer.

Also the easiest way to vastly improve performance (eveyone should do this) is to create an autoexec.cfg file (open it with notepad) and add the lines:

con_restricted = 0
r_texturesstreaming = 0

place that file in your crysis wars installation directory(i think) you can check if it is working by typing con_restricted in the console - if the value is 0 it works, otherwise youve made a mistake in your config file

thats the biggest load of shit ive heard... fps is different for every1 depending on ur setup... above 50 is wasted lol... wats the point of getting the best rig out there like cos and get 150 fps for no reason??... it improves ur gameplay a fuck load!..lol... and when u put vsync it doesnt cap ur frames ust for the sake of it hahahaha.. it caps it to 60 fps and gets rid of the screen tears when u spin around quickly.. keeps the smoothness rather than tearing here and there...

So i may no be the best player around, but I still make you wish you never bought that tank VTOL when i snipe you out of the air half across the map Wink

So tips on VTOL sniping:

Simple, at night look for the red contrails, all projectiles have travel time so wait till they edge into your sights or sit still then let loose. Gauss tank is the best choice, one shot kill, but you only have 10 shots so don't let them go to waste, its easy to be killed by a wily VTOL pilot, so make sure you have good situational awareness.

If encountering enemy tanks back out immediately or try to call in for some friendly assistance, more than likely you will be bested by the tanks because they have a better RoF than you do, and believe me a double cannon AA can be a lot of trouble for even the best Gauss tank sniper out there.

Also make sure you don't miss, a VTOL pilot's aim is to harrass who ever is on the ground so be patient, wait for it to swing around for a better angle and then plug one up its arse. Also never EVER stay in one place to snipe keep moving, because ocne they have your position theyll hunt you down, because i assure you there are more VTOLs than you have ammo for, especially if you miss.

So when it comes to making VTOL whores' lives hell be patient, they usually have invested around 800 to acquire that tank VTOL and your gauss tank will only cost you 500, they only have one chance to take you down, because the second you have a bead they won't be around to use that 800PPs worth of overpowered fire power.

hahahahaha.... me and wounded always aim for the head.. quickest way to drop em.. so y wouldnt u??... shoot them int he crotch wtf??... tahts not gonna do ANYTHING as theres no recoil at all and the bullets wont spread if ur using a laser...

turn off mouse acceleration??.. hahaha its personal preference.... ive never played with it off... i love mouse acceleration... u get used to it and as i sed its personal preference...

so ur saying taht cos gets 150 frames for no reason aye?... crock of shit i reckon ahhahaha
